The History
Founded in 1851 by an act of the General Assembly of the State providing for the organization of counties, the first commissioners of the new county purchased 50 acres on which to establish a seat of justice. That area was first known as New California and later as Dallas. In 1868, the name was changed to Marble Hill.
Although Missouri was in theory a neutral state during the Civil War, Bollinger County families were often divided in their loyalties, and there were both Union and Confederate sympathizers in the county. One skirmish in the Marble Hill area took place in 1862 near the Laflin community. Northern and Southern troops clashed near the banks of Crooked Creek, with the Confederates routing the Union troops. Three soldiers were killed and many more wounded.
"I love the city and I'm very proud of it. I hope to see Marble Hill grow and become a little shining light in the foothills of the Ozarks."
--Russell Masterson, mayor of Marble Hill
10 Things You Love About Your City

Hometown: Benton Harbor, Mich.
Years in Marble Hill: 21
1. Real estate and personal property taxes are low compared to the surrounding areas. If you ask the citizens, I think most would agree that property taxes are lower than in the Cape, Jackson and Advance areas.
2. We have several fine eating establishments where you can get a variety of food -- hamburgers, steak, pizza, country cooking, barbecue. For a small town, we have several nice little restaurants.
3. The Bollinger County Museum of Natural History is a fascinating place for history buffs. Even if you're not a history buff, there are a lot of things to see at the county museum about Bollinger County and the surrounding counties.
4. There must be a lot of money here, because we have four banks and there's a friendly group of people at all of them. They always like to welcome new residents.
5. We have several park areas that can accommodate a family reunion, church activities or sports. There's a horse arena for horse shows. The parks are very friendly and a lot of people in Marble Hill hold a variety of activities there. They're very good and very nice parks.
6. We have an excellent volunteer fire department. We're really proud of them. They've made an impact and have a task five fire rating, which really helps lower our insurance rates. The volunteer fire department is second to none.
7. The residents are friendly people who really care about others. I'm very proud of the residents and how they've come to the aid of others in floods and ice storms. The community really comes together and helps one another.
8. We have several civic organizations that conjoin to meet local needs. We're in the process of starting a Lions Club and we have a Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and Optimist Club. A person can join these and become a part of the community and watch it grow.
9. We're in close proximity to thousands of acres owned by the Missouri Department of Conservation. There are several campgrounds that bring people to camp and visit Marble Hill... Our setting is in the foothills of the Ozarks and it's beautiful country.
10. We have a full-service medical and dental clinic and an excellent health department. They're very community-oriented.
